I did and come back. There is nothing out there. Always chakka jaam, lets say hijauda schakka jam. Dirts n trash everywhere. People stinks out there. They shit on the streets. Stray dogs barking every night. No clubs for fun. The woman are little and got tiny butt, no attraction at all unless u go to Thamel looking for foreign woman. People envy u coz u got money and green card. You will get cancer in 5 years coz of air pollution. No water no electricity. Ugly vulture looking people holding positions in the government who will take bribes for anything. Men walking on the streets with big belly looking like fags and pregnant. They don't wipe their ass with toilet paper. The culture itself is screwed up, people worshipping animals, rats and snakes and dicks and vaginas. Putting big red dots on their foreheads, wearing those ugly looking old fashioned clothes like burkha, daura suruwal, dhaka topi, gunyo choli, potte, patuki, kharpan, mangalsutra etc. don't go back brah, just go there for visit.

@ Yeap - I've also thought about that, and since I haven't done that so what I've thought is purely objective. While most of what was mentioned by Bigrekoketto were true, yet if you're determined and want to do good then those things will become secondary. Certainly if you return to Nepal with high hopes then you will be disappointed due to the lack of infrastructure, and also the difference in culture there. But since most of us grew up over there, so I think the initial intertia will be overcome sooner than later. Especially if you become busy and focus on the positive then life will become normal. Beside if you're planning to get settle down then you will have added support system. Having said that, try to think about your options. I don't know what's your situation here in the US.

Thank you ramas and Bigrekoketto. I have a green and have a decent job here . I agree with the cultural difference and the infrastructure of Nepal. I think i can overcome all that since we all have seen it and been through that and that is our home. I went to Nepal about 3 times and i was able to adjust, i wasn't expecting too much anyway but i didn't stay long enough to see or face any situation that will help me decide. The real question is, what are the pros and cones for doing day to day activity or maintaining a life something like we do in the daily bases as: Job Search Banking Building House Maintaining House Raising kids Health Decent paying job (40000) or something similar is must. How hard it will be in managing the daily life certainly not right now with the current conditions but in the near future if things starts smoothing out??? Appreciate your thoughts!!

Job Search - There are IT companies, banks, tourism industry, etc. but I don't have good info with regards to job search. Googling gives few results. Idk how they recruit for private sector over there, other than word of mouth. Banking - Nepal, especially Kathmandu, has adequate banking services, including multinational banks. Building House - According to what I've heard, due to the recent earthquake, the government has put some kind of cease on passing new housing blueprint. Again, please confirm. Maintaining House - Not clear about that. You can install solar water heater on a roof; water, and electricity are still a problem. Perhaps you can install good battery backup system for your home. Depending on an area, you may get regular tap water, if not you can buy tanker water. Another option is the ground water pumping. for regular maintenence of a house, you can get supplies in local "convenient store." I would assume that pretty much anything is available in big department stores there. Raising kids - You probably know it already that there is no free education in nepal, unless I guess you send your kids to a government school. There are many private schools in kathmandu, cost may be your deciding factor. There is even international standard school/s. Also if you've brothers/sisters who have kids then one good thing is that your kids will have good family environment (of course this all depends on individuals), given there are so many festivals and holidays in Nepal. Health - Again there are good hospitals in Kathmandu, and cost will be your deciding factor. Nepal has international eye hospital in Kathmandu. Some of the Nepali doctors are well known for their work. I don't think there's any strong EPA presence in Nepal so expect some air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution. Having said all that, you can change things that are not right. You can utilize your personal experience, education, knowledge, etc. to ease life not only for yourself and your family but to others as well. (I've thought about several projects) --edit - meant international standard eye hospital

Electricity 15000 us dollar, to install 500watt solar. 1000 us doallr to have 1000watt inverter, which is good enough for freez, TV, computer, water pump you will not feel load shedding. Only problem is with cooking, these days, If you have induction heater, it will reduce the cooking time by almost 40%. You can cook food in short time when electricity is available. Cost of building house, if you have land 3000nrs per square foot, with everything inside. If you want to supervise yourself it will be down to 2500 per sq ft. Water supply In many areas you can dig well and install water filter system. Cost around 1000 us dollar. In ktm there are some areas where you can not dig well. Deep boring Cost between 5000_10000 ., depending on how deep u need to go. Water will be enough for 20 families. If nothing above mentioned can be done then, you have to buy water in tanks. Kindergarten for kids There are kindergarten which costs 20 us dollar per month to 150 us dollar per month in ktm. Choice is yours. Food Approx 10, 000nrs per month without meat. Cloths Don't trust branded dress's. Non branded clothes are not costly. Only fools use branded dress.

As far as construction is concerened - one floor jati diyeracha, but thats about it..

Let me tell you this, no matter how many years you lived in the states once you reach there, you will feel strange, confused and lost with all that chaos, traffic, small cars, horns, noise, smoke, dust and what not for first couple of days. But after few bumpy rides in micro, sajha bus, cars n motorcycle, you will come back to the reality and you will never feel that you were ever in United States all these years.

Real problem moving back home after living years abroad is not lack of infrastructure. Of course its inconvenient at times but you always have alternatives. Have your own car, have solar, inverter and a/c at home. And you are all set, as far as luxury goes. Real problem I found during my last visit was with the way people think over there. I will try to list out some of the stuffs I personally saw during my 1 month stay. 1. Value of life - people don't value their life as much as they should. Especially at this time, public bus are carrying passengers more than twice their capacity, in the roof and hanging on the door. There are numerous accidents where many people are dead. Still people don't think twice to get into the bus they know are over crowded. Once accident happens there is no investigation on what went wrong. It's insane how lightly people take take risk at every step of life. 2. Waste of resources - Useful time is being wasted in getting basic things. People in line to get gas, oil, paying electricity bills, every government office has huge unmanaged line. Everywhere there is waste of time. Shopping takes alot of time in Nepal because of bargaining at every shop. If you dont know how to bargain you will get ripped off. Things that can be done easily online takes up your whole day. You will see people in the streets just standing there doing nothing. Just wasting time. 3. Insane inflation of money - If you think few grand american dollar is alot of money in Nepal, you are wrong. The amount of inflation in last 5-6 years is insane. Cost of living and food can be compared with developed countries. For Example, 2 liter of Coke bottle costs less than $2 in US, but it costs about 200 Rs, over there. Rending a apartment in Kathmandu costs as much as some of the cities in US. Even price of momo went up to 150 above. How can people surviving where average monthly income is less than Rs 25,000. 4. Concept of living - Found it very interesting that success to Nepali people is building a nice house or buying land that they will never use. Even my parents are building a new house just for the shake of having new house. They save every penny, never go out for dinner, barely go for vacation so that they collect jewelry and buy house. If someones son buy new house, everyone thinks he is the most successful and everyone gossips about how they used to be poor. Society is very materialistic. Enjoying life and being prosperous is entirely different concept in Nepal.

Thank you much all for your thoughts and insight. Agree it can be channeling for a few days or month for sure. Real challenge is to get a job. Once i have that line up then it is the matter of adjusting i believe which everyone agrees one. I am not going at the moment for sure with all the mess but thinking in the near further. Yes, i agree with the inflation, dhulo dhuwa, people are so nosy for sure and they are right on the top to let you down, talk behind your back but i am not worried that much, i think i can adjust that (i think) , who knows what may lie ahead when it gets to the point where you say enough is enough. I guess Social life comes with pros and cons and it is not the same Nepal i left years ago . I might have to think a little bit and Decide. I know i was born and raised there but the Kathmandu i left was nice and beautiful, people were friendly they used to respect each other, there was something called love and care which is so lost now a days but i Love my Kathmandu :)

I think it would be a good idea to have a group in Nepal for those who have returned after staying overseas for many years, for example, like ex-NRN. This will help, even in little ways, in adjusting back to life in Nepal. It will also be a good networking, and might help in finding job with the experience of overseas. We have some exposure to management in companies in the west, so Nepal could use that expertise. If not at least the group will be good to tackle some common challenges for those returning back to Nepal for good.

I liked hamrochautari's points. Point #4 exactly matches with my family situation. They sit on large amount of wealth but never spend money on travel, eat out, learn new things, comfort their life etc. I am pissed off that they don't want to change for their good. I am sure most Nepalese in US have lot of inheritable property in Nepal, but still their family want money from us.

Yeap, if you can find "yourself", maybe it's the " satisfaction" you will be happy in nepal. Though life is tough , people are happy there. Atleast , society is still cohesive and helpful. Obviously, society is getting more materialistic, it has the right fusions between the old and new. You will find a different lifestyle outside of cities. I can bet you you will never get bored in Nepal. One thing you need to overcome is the frustration which will eventually come after living there for few months at the current situation . I suggest you set specific goals what you want to achieve and what you want to be. Even a small achievements over there will bring you greater satisfaction due to loved ones around you and if you can have good friends circle. I see it's livable. I have seen people doing it. After living in USA for 12 years, I have lost the charm here. i feel like going back but haven't decided what can i do there? Don't wanna go with out a plan.
