does tps allow one to get a green card based on employment without having to leave the us? can anyone here who knows of the process confirm this?

Going to h1b will require leaving country. Going to GC will require leaving country only if are not documented.

Yes you can... PERM and i140 has nothing to do with status...for aos 485 you can adjust if your entry was inspected , which I believe in your case is true.. Ask you employer to apply perm and I 140... Fyi.. There are cases in some circuit court that even uninspected individual can AOS.. I am not lawyer but the info is based on my research ..I recommend you call USCIS first .. They will provide you appropriate info..To confirm talk to lawyer also...

By " has nothing to do with status" I meant employee need not be in non immigrant visa for GC .. Perm and I 140 can be applied in TPS also ..for AOS you can adjust on TPS also if you entry was inspected..
