Recently got my permanent residency green card. Plan is to get citizenship and then *thinking* going Nepal for good. I am already eligible for social security income and with couple more years working I should be able to claim receive livable social security income from Nepal as well. I have about ~20k in my 401k and 25k cash savings. After having kids here, thinking about settling in nepal (kids will be of us citizen so they can choose to continue study here after 18).

Have my own house in Nepal and being only son, I think its my duty to take care of my parents and not think $$ all the time. At the time time I have to also think long term and see if I have enough savings…

At what point (financial savings wise) do you say I will have enough savings to settle in Nepal?

" I am already eligible for social security income and with couple more years working I should be able to claim receive livable social security income from Nepal as well."

Do you mean that your age is 65 or older? If so you are good.

To be eligible to get Social Security Benefit, you have to have 40 points(which I guess you already had) and 67 years old.

No matter how much money you have accumulated and how much point you have earned, you have to be 67 years to be eligible to get social security benefit.

Also, you can't cash your 401K until you reach 67 years old.
Of course you can cash it but you will have pay all taxes and fat penalty.

There's not such thing has "how much saving is enough" . It varies by individuals and what their goal is. Money is never enough. When you have $10k savings you want $20k, when you have $20k you want $40k..so it never stops. Best thing to do is listen to your heart. Ask your parents what they want. Make them happy. if you think it's your responsible to take care of them just go home and enjoy your time with your family cuz that moment will not come back later even if you wanted later. Be happy, enjoy !

Goo luck.

also how do you plan on living in Nepal for a long term? don't you have to renew your visa every 6 months or so... and also don't forget you have to pay tax to the IRS no matter where in the world you're living , including the earnings from your property of Nepal.

You have 3-5 yrs to get citizenship so still have plenty of time to prepare and think about what you gonna do in Nepal.

do people in H1B or other visas also get social security credit point? I mean after they get green card and citizenship, will the social security credit from previous statuses roll over?

@magorkhe1: NepaliBhai has written "To be eligible to get Social Security Benefit, you have to have 40 points(which I guess you already had) and 67 years old".
Since I am also paying social security tax, I might also be accumulating some credit, no?

ya all your contributions will not go waste. meaning if you were working on opt, and h1 and later got gc and citizenship, they are all under the same social security number and the change of status does not matter if you have been paying for them. But don't be so hopeful because there are many rumors about ss getting bankrupt. Also if you plan on retiring in Nepal you need a long term visa from Nepal. New Nepali constitution talks about continuation of citizenship but no body is giving a flying fk to make any laws following the constitution.

also if you're on your 30s and plan to go to Nepal when you're 67, you will have no body to help you out. REmember most of the the relavites or family have either passed on or too old, or out of touch for so many years that they do not feel strong connection with you. you will most probably end up in a town home or an elderly home/apartment in the US.

@bajara: Why don't you punch in your numbers in this retirement tool?
https://www.nerdwallet.com/investing/retirement-calculator

Though based on ballpark guidelines, the tool suggests that I can retire at age 65 with $12,615 to spend each month.
