Hello! I am thinking of travelling to India with valid Nepali Passport and RTD (Refugee Travel Document) which is the Re-entry permit to US for Asylees. Do I still need to get Indian Visa on my RTD to Travel to India and return to US with no issues? Has anyone been through such situation? Could you please share your experience? Thanks in advance!

Why would you need visa ? You are using a Nepali Passport to enter India. May be if you were stateless/didn’t have any other travel doc besides the RTD things might be different.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. I understand I can enter India with Nepali Passport without any issue. My concern is while trying to return to US from India and showing the RTD at Indian Airport to depart for US. Will they make it an issue because I didn't get Indian Visa on my RTD to enter India and used Nepali Passport instead? Thank you!

I don’t think so. Legally speaking you should be okay however with the Nepali passport they might try to give you a hard time. I remember going to UK via Delhi and got questioned more by the immigration officer in Delhi more than border control in UK. Ultimately they cannot stop you from traveling but just be prepared to answer questions like why did you come to India, how long did you stay, where did you go & how you got the RTD. I’m assuming you are planning to go to Nepal(you don’t have to answer). Just be prepared. It’s not easy like before just prepare yourself.

Thank you for sharing your experience. The problem with RTD is that lot of countries don't recognize it. Also, Immigration Officers don't know the purpose of the document. They simply think that RTD is only carried by Refugees who fled their country and should not be using their home country passport. RTD serves as passport for those who don't possess the national passport from their home country (in most cases they are unable to), however it also serves as simply re-entry permit to United States after travelling abroad. I simply think I don't need VISA but couldn't be so sure. Couple of folks that I know that are in same situation as me has travelled to India with the Indian Visa on RTD and didn't use Nepali Passport. I am looking to get more info from someone who travelled to India and returned without India Visa. I could apply for the Indian visa and travel with Visa but I need to travel urgently and don't think can wait 4 weeks to get the Visa (I heard it usually takes 4 weeks to get Visa on RTD). Quite honestly, I am travelling to up to New Delhi to visit my Dad who is getting his treatment at the Hospital there.
