I don't see any reason for smoking cigarette . It crackes me up when some people makes excuse for smoking cigarette. Eg (tension, tragedy, bla bla bla) ................ .. Well, i will rather spend money on something useful then spend on cigarette. Just imagine smokers, if you save the amount of money you spend on cigarette , you can't believe how much money you will spend in a month time.. so, save those money and to something productive instead of killing ur health..

It is an addiction, it's not that easy. I quit about a year ago after smoking for 10 years. I finally quit for good after at least 15 failed tries. You know what, i still really miss it.

Hey, Why all the fuss about smokin. I dont know why people are so reminde of monetary loss when it comes to someone else smoking.Myself bein a smoker I see no point in quittin it. I dont know why all smokers always say they want to quit.Come on yaar,its not a big deal. There rae ways of enjoyin n if u enjoy with a drag then no problem.Its not that harmful as many other passtimes or say things might be.

I will not argue for/against the health hazards of smoking because I'm more interested in the topic of this thread - that quitting smoking will save you money.

I find this argument lame and mostly theoretical. To actually prove that quitting smoking will save you money, you would have to do a year-long research on two groups, both with same level of income and lifestyles, but with one difference - members of one group smoke habitually and the members of the other group don't.

Let's say each smoker spends $1000 dollars a year on cigarettes. So if the argument that quitting smoking saves you money is true, the members of the non-smoking group would each have to have $1000 more in savings than the members of the smoking group at the end of the year. Not likely.

If i were to do this research, I would begin with the hypothesis that the non-smoking group would NOT save $1000 each as a result of not smoking. Why? Because they would spend the money on something else. Having extra money on hand doesn't mean that you will tuck it away safely in your bank account. Most likely, you will spend it on something you wouldn't have if you didn't have that extra cash on hand.

Conclusion: To those really addicted to smoking, good luck in your quest to quit. But to a lot of us, like me, smoking is a choice. I choose to spend $4 on a pack of Marlboro lights as much as you choose to spend $5 to rent a porn video or buy a bag of fattening chips. Which is more worthwhile? You could argue that all life long.

republican, exactly the well-said version of the points I made earlier. It's my money and I can spend it on whatever/whenever/whichever way I want to. As far as I am not blowin' the smoke right on somebody's face or as far as the one who kisses me doesn't have a problem with it, it's nobody's business to come to the froum and PREACH about hazards caused by smoking and further, try to convert smokers to non-smokers. No offense, but it's like those people who come to my doorstep and try to persuade me to follow Jesus.

I remember a long time ago in NPR (i think), the debate was on having a "Smoking Section" in public places.
A frazzeled woman called in highstrung and said: "A Smoking section in a public place is like a peeing section in the swimming pool!!!!"
I still laugh at the analogy.

As for saving money: I agree with Republican, I have seen non-smoking women addicted to shopping and men addicted to gambling. Not much saving in either.


But, Cigarrette smoking IS injurious to health if in case you did not know! :P
