Astitiwa Team's interview with an obviously self-aware and self-assured Nepali prostitute gave one slice of life in contemporary urban Nepal. The contours of that life migh have been jarring to some; but let's accept that that TOO is a life in Nepal today. VOW, a women's magazine in Nepal, recently came out this feature: "How some urban, professional women in Nepal are coping with life after divorce." It makes a very interesting reading; and this piece also gives a glimpse of MANY changes going through contemporary Nepali urban societies. - http://www.vownepal.com/modules.php?name=Regulars&myaction=show&art_type=general&myid=422 oohi ashu

Who says Nepali women are not confident. Educated women can stand on their own feet but the problem is how come I know most of them. I did not know they were divorcee...........???? One needs to choose between "make or break", no third way to be in life.

Ashu, thanks for this thread..at least now these are real interviews with worthy people ..unlike the other senseless thread.. As a child, I'd always feel that parents stay together. Most parents are selfish in Modern Nepal. They get married barely in the age of 20s. Give birth by 21. Then they start behaving adulturous, Partying, cheating, and what not between 22-28. Or in the same breadth they go to college, or start working. In other words exploring life. The child or children is obviously ignored all along. From the examples it proves that divorce in Nepal is occuring primarily because of Early marriagges and immaturity. As for the kids life after the parents divorce is worse, cause obviously the single parent would be absent from home to make living. The issues pertaining to the divorce were because of the selfish parents, who never thought twice about the kids' before bringing them to the world and most of them say things like I would have divorced many years ago if it were not for the kids, I would married again if it were not for the kids...blaming the kids of all their problems. I do respect women who are taking control of their lives specially the divorcees. But I respect those more, who understand the meaning of for better and worse, who make marriage a working institution for them and their kids. I encourage all the divorcees posted here to look at marriage positively, and having had an experience - the puppylove kind, they ought to go for second marriages - the reallove kind. All the best.A married life after a certain age is inevitable and it is proven that married people lead a longer and healthier life.

very interesting interview.. thx for sharing. I think we nepalese live in these superficial clouds we tend to ignore the reality. I hope we can get more and more these types of intervies so that we live in the real world. For various reasons, couple separate and has nothing to do with just arranged marriage, love marriage, child marriage or all the other mumbo jumbo.. you just hit a wall one day and realize you are in a abusive relationship. In any relationship the key issue is how much one is able to compromise or sacrifice to be in that particular relationship. The irony of the human nature is there are egos involvede and then end of the story. Its funny that we tend to show our worse behaviour for somebody we love the most... .. dunno what the reasons are..still trying to figure that out.. Anyways, i don't think divorce is something that should be encouraged, but in this ever eveolving society dynamics have changed.. the women now have tools to changes their lives. I think us "the macho men" need to realize that the tradiitonal power tripped relationship will not last.. the time has simply changed.. like men women are seeking for their own freedom... I hope to see more and more articles that mirrors our today's society.. ciao

precisely said, lovaboy. arranged marriages, it is understandable, because for the most part and the majority population, what is looked for in a guy/girl is basic materialistic qualities than ideological similarities. two different people, world apart in their personalities and ideologies, living together for a common cause- it could crumble down. but i have seen love marriages fail, and i don't know why. but it definitely is a bold step on the part of Nepali women to stand up to their freedom and personal choice if things were starting to get painful. "There are a lot of loopholes in the divorce laws of Nepal that are in favour of men, which makes it more difficult for women to come forward.." there are many other loopholes in Nepalese law that are biased towards women, which need to be corrected. but the country is stagnated as of now, so i don't know if there will be any changes at all.
