जे होस् good luck!

I wonder how many Sajhaites in Kathmandu joined this pro-democracy rally. Citizens? Speak Out: In colors, Sounds, and Faces - http://insn.org/?p=1751 Thousands participated in citizens? dharna for democracy and peace at Basantapur Dabli today. Today?s Basantapur event was simply stunning. The colours were amazing, the diversity was breathtaking, and the order of sound was simply astounding. Asmina and her team?s white mouth-bands, Sarita Mishra?s solo tabla, Ramesh/Rayan/Ram Krishna?s songs, Dhirendra Premharshi, Biplob Pratik, Durgalal Shrestha, Purna Baidhya, Rajani Mila, Suresh Kiran?s poems, Manoj Gajurel?s satire?these were simply unprecedented mixture topped up with sharp and succinct speeches by Dhan Kumari Sunar, Bairagi Kainla, Keshav Man Shaky and Shambhu Thapa. All of them touched the heart of thousands who were present there. Khagendra Sangroula was simply the best in his sharp humour, witty remarks and presentation. The five cartoons hung around the Basantapur Dabli. One cartoon by Ramesh Bisht showed ?loktantra? kicking ?rajtantra? by the abyss. Batsayana?s cartoon showed poor man carrying Rolce Royace into the Royal Palace with a gun-toting armymen following him. ?Ek Yuga Ma Ek Din Ek Choti Aauncha? (One Day in an Age comes only once) by Ram Krishna Duwal made everybody clap in thunder. Bairagi Kainla likened present rule with a ?drama in which the king has played ?autocrat'?. ?Gaun Gaun Bata Utha? (Rise Up from Villages) by Ram Krishna Duwal, Ramesh and Rayan made everybody stand up and dance. Dhana Kumari Sunar said, ?this nation belongs to us, but not the state?. It is for us all to fight for change so that every dalit, janajati, woman and people from remote areas also can say with pride that this land belongs to all, she added. Keshav Man Shakya, a janajati activist, demanded that a new constitution be drafted through constituent assembly and that this ensure representation of Nepal?s diverse peoples in every institution it creates. Shambhu Thapa, president of Nepal Bar Association, asked the security forces and other government officials not to obey the ?orders of this unconstitutional rule?. There is no point in talking to the king, he said, adding that the political parties have to demand unconditional end of king?s rule. ?A new constitution that we will make will ensure supremacy of the people?, he argued. Myth of Geopolitical reality, Indophobia and Competent Diplomacy यहाँहरुको लागि एक आकर्षण: एकजना साथीले नेपेलाई माओवादी प्यारो छ कि क्या हो भनेर छेड हान्नु भएको छ, एक पर्संगमा ) 10-Jan-2002 - http://www.sajha.com/archives/openthread.cfm?threadid=2914&dsn=sajhaarchive [the idea that we are at the mercy of India and that we should not take on a powerful country ] is not a double standard. It is a lack of standards. It is [a] self-defeat, [a] demoralization and suicide. It is a clinical depression of a nation. It is an illness large section of our society, notably some intellectuals and all political leaders, (exclude Maoists) are ailing with. Note that Khum Bahadur Khadka (?) recently said the same words in public, "every government of Nepal has to be at the mercy of the cooperation of India" (accurate wording ?). Was he telling the reality ? Yes. Was he telling the eternal truth ? No. He was [actually]telling about the state of his mind and the mind of the state he runs. Indophobia is an illness of mind. It has two forms 1. hating India in everything, 2. fearing India in everything. In any form, it is harmful. It inhibits Nepal's progress. Intellectual Indophobia [cf. Emotional Indophobia] is armed with a deceptively undefined fear factor called "geopolitic reality". The later ignores dynamism of relationship, undermines the power of diplomacy and grows on the semi-myth of "soil". Therefore it is essentially an illness of mind. We need [a] therapy. Let me show you how it is a psychological illness. When people state that Nepal is at the mercy of India, they just state the statement as a generalized fear. They do not/ can not think of a specific case (existing or imagined) where Nepal would/ could have acted differently, were she not at the mercy [of India]. They do not go case by case. They just think, what's the point, in any case we are surrounded by large India, it MUST MEAN it has superiority or advantage in some thing, somewhere, some time. See ? a generalized fear. Is/should there be a therapy for this illness ? Yes. I hope more people will come to this thread and contribute their ideas for/against such matter of vital importance to our country's future. I leave [at] saying that India does not give us [a] free lunch. We pay this [way] or that way. India would not give us more just because our posture is of a demoralized nation. On the contrary, we shall get more if we stand as a nation with awareness, resolve and no intention to hurt anyone. *** *** *** . . .I totally agree that we have to deal with India diplomatically rather than with hysteria and emotion. Actually, that's my whole point ... No hysteria. Not only when hating India but also when fearing India, or loving India for that matter. Critical thinking, good diplomacy, wise play of cards (both available and that can be gotten), but no hysteria. We should keep in mind the geography or whatever dimension of our relationship just to get the best deal. But whatever we do we should do without panicking, without making ourselves obsessed with geopolitics. Geopolitics should be knowledge, not an obsession. We can not afford putting a billboard of geopolitics on the highway of our progress. *** *** *** [During the 1988 Blockade] I think we should have gained something by playing those cards [ US and China's vocal support to Nepal] with India. After all the blockade was lifted afterwards. Whatever is, my assertion is that the question should be how wisely we played the cards to maximize the deal we get. Obsession of geopolitics could have made us a poor player. [Unless it is absolutely necessary, our having truculent political posture with India is counter productive ]. Exactly, no truculent political posture unless it is absolutely necessary. But also no fallen flat posture unless it is absolutely necessary, for example, to play tricks (lets use our imagination here). Just a pleasant and amicable posture all the time. *** *** *** If some day the whole world becomes a single boarderless nation and I live till then to see it [happening], I will be the [happiest] person in the world even if I have to give up my Nepalitwa. But that is a far away dream. While there is a trend of disintegration of forcefully and artificially integrated nations in the world, there is also an encouraging unification of common interests, economy and currency (Euro in the case). I was harboring this dream of South Asia Economic Union. Thanks to the SAARC summit in Kathmandu, something is happening. If I am not robbed of freedom and democracy, I don't mind South Asian Federation either. *** *** *** What should be Nepal's role in India-Pakistan or India-China conflict ? Honest broker of peace. Because honesty is the best policy. I think honesty and neutrality should give us more edge in future. If we know anything about Indian and Pak mind by now, it won't be a bad idea to collect something useful for future too, but without harming our credibility. It seems a tough challenge. I am not sure how good we have sharpened our diplomatic skill. I heard somewhere that Bhutan's diplomacy was much superior than Nepal's as shown in the case of refugees. And it is no secret that 'source-force' but not qualification is the qualification of Nepal's diplomats. So I am not so sure about our performance, if that ever required.

Nepe, I enjoyed reading your above posting. Here, your thoughts are similar to mine -- and having travelled and worked quite a bit across South Asia in the last one year, I say that we have to find ways to ride the Indian (and the Chinese) boom. You write: "I heard somewhere that Bhutan's diplomacy was much superior than Nepal's as shown in the case of refugees. " Bhutan's diplomats are sharp, speak excellent English, and appear to have been educated at St. Whatever schools of Darjeeling . . . followed by college/university in the US/UK, and returned home to join diplomatic service. India, Bangladesh and Pakistan have schools to train future diplomats. Meantime, Nepal's best and the brightest go to the West, and stay there, with their face forever pressed against the outside glass looking on in Nepal. oohi ashu

>I heard somewhere that Bhutan's diplomacy was much superior than Nepal's as shown in the case of refugees. And it is no secret that 'source-force' but not qualification is the qualification of Nepal's diplomats. >. . . followed by college/university in the US/UK, and returned home to join diplomatic serviceIndia, Bangladesh and Pakistan have schools to train future diplomats. . Coincidently, Ashu & Nepe bear the similar views in this regard, does it mean this thread doesn't continues longer?

Ashu, It's a matter of pleasure to find you and myself sharing a similar view. As a matter of fact, I think, barring from the matter of domestic politics, we probably share similar, if not identical, views on great many things. Even in case of domestic politics, there is an interesting, if not bizarre, similarity between the approach you often have emphasized for dealing with the King and the one I am taking here for dealing with India. I would probably be saying the same thing you are saying about how to deal with the King, had it not been for a small difference I see between India and the King. With India, we have issues that can not be fought most efficiently with what can be called 'moral strength' of the issues alone. On the contrary, our issues with the King is of the nature that can be (and I would say, must be) fought with it's 'moral strength' alone. I think this is what our difference basically is and all that you and I are fighting are mere details of that. *** *** *** You wrote: >I say that we have to find ways to ride the Indian (and the Chinese) boom. Absolutely. Although I have not read in words, I feel many of us might be banking on the automatic SPILL OVER effect of the Indian/Chinese economic boom. However, (you are in a better position to caution these people on this) with their relative stability as compared to us, Myanmar, Bangladesh and other SAARC countries might take our share (of opportunity) if we fail to become a stable country soon. Still, stability alone won't be enough. Our people will have to acquire more sense of entrepreneurship and sharpen their cross-border trading skills. When I was "on the same page" with you during our debate on the curriculum of Nepali language a while ago, I was actually thinking about this very issue. We better spend our valuable time to train our students to make them internationally more competent rather than encouraging them to write better Nepali poems. *** *** *** On Nepal's diplomacy, I feel like crying when I see our ambassadors. Sometime ago, our ambassador in DC, Mr. Kedar Bhakta Shrestha, wrote a rebuttal to an article published in a local Newspaper. The letter was so poor that the editor had to reject it for publication ! The poor embassy was forced to circulate the letter by emails and Nepali websites. Even the darling boy of both Panchayat and Prajatantra, Dr. Bhekh Bahadur Thapa, disappoints. Wasn't he saying once that he has not studied the constitution of Bhutan and that is because he thinks that particular knowledge is not important in dealing with the case of Bhutani refugees in Nepal ? This is how our best diplomats are. >Meantime, Nepal's best and the brightest go to the West, and stay there, >with their face forever pressed against the outside glass looking on in Nepal. I believe our population pool is big enough to allow us to afford losing a fraction of it's brain to "drain". And I would rather celebrate than pitying whatever small small things, including sentimental attachments, these drained brains could do for Nepal. *** *** ***

Tsk nepe. I am the nemesis. The goddess of retribution. Please read some Greek mythology. That will enlighten you. I mean read, not just google. If you knew what my namesake standks for then you would not have accused me as a jhinge poster who drinks blood. I bestow vengence, rath, to those who are puffed up with hot air and go unchecked.

Nepe started showing his psycho behaviour again???? He was quite for sometime, I thought he was good with the medications before. No no no, he is not ok yet. He needs more of those tabs for total rehab. He probably is trying to say that he wants to copy HUBAHU commie politics from dead commie countries and gingle some jargons like - "geopolitical situation", "decont. monarchy" "Lok tantra" "Janatantra" etc etc and finally to FREAKING ...BAAAD. Nepe wrote: "It's a matter of pleasure to find you and myself sharing a similar view." Sure. Since -- as I have said on Sajha before -- I like to decide issues on a case-by-case basis, rest assured that with me, strong and heated and even brutal disagreements with you or anyone else in one area will NOT spill over into ALL other areas. That's why, it's entirely possible to agree with you or anyone else on some issues, and still disagree or have divergent opinions on other matters. That said, I have little sympathy for the kind of attitude I often see in our various Nepali communities which goes like this: "If you are my friend, then you and I must agree on everything. If you and I are enemies, then we must oppose one another on everything regardless of what the merit of the issues are." I am sure that in the last 10 years, the Nepali politics has shown us all the paralysing effects of such an attitude. **** As a Nepali, one of the heart-breaking things I find these days is to travel to places across South Asia and South East Asia, and see how other countries have put or are putting their house in order to grow economically and to assert themselves in the region . . . only to see Nepal reverse its whatever meager gains to slide backward all the more. At the rate Nepal is going anywhere, it'll probably take anywhere from 10 to 25 years (if not longer) to sort out its mess -- and that means two to three generations of able Nepalis in Nepal will have to do nothing but fire-fighting and cleaning up the mess in Nepal. oohi ashu

Nepe, I thought, you were a cyber junkie. But you make Sense most of the times. I guess, I was a bit harsh on previous postings. I should not have gone that far. You and I share the common platform ? Sajha to share our thought about nepali politics. There are so many Nepalese but there are really a few who are concerned about the political affair of our country. Keep it up. Who knows, some day , we might meet in person !!!! Good luck Nepe !!!!

sd_man, Take it easy, brother. Nobody is perfect. And life is not always fair. It brings you all kinds of things. You take your share and move on. Ghalib knew it. A candle has to burn in every shade and color until dawn. *** *** *** *** Ashu, You are right that we suffer severely from lack of democratic culture of dissent. However, I think it is more a problem related to etiquette than a problem of faulty reasoning actually. I do not think Nepalis are intellectually challanged so much as to believe that our enemies are always wrong and our friends are always right. I can tell from my experience of Nepali life that we are as intelligent as any people in the world and we do know it when our enemies are right or when our friends are wrong. We just are unable to articulate that. That's all. And the things that disable us to articulate such things are our feudalistic values of 'dignity' and 'honor'. After 1990, we indeed were supposed to learn to replace the feudalistic values of "dignity" and "honor" with the democratic culture of "respectful dissent", "graceful acceptance" and likes. But we did not. Apparently something is not right. You and I have probably different views on what is not right. In any case, I am very optimistic and believe that things are happening in a right direction, although not in a desirable pace yet. Basically our weakness is that we are weak. We can not think of fighting the strong and powerful. By saying so, I may have sounded bizarre to some, because what we have been seeing in Nepal is nothing but fight, fight and fight. How can a fighter be weak ? Well, if we look at all political fights carefully, a pattern will emerge where we will see our fighters actually targeting a weaker and vulnerable party while dispensing the stronger and robust one. I know I am making a very general and very sweeping assertion. However, I believe that I am not very much wrong. Now, to all this, we are seeing a sign of change. People are emboldened and they are targeting the most powerful and the robust one too. Now I am hopeful that perhaps now we can show our courage to fight our own "friends" and patch up with the "enemies" if and when necessary, not based on the calculation of physical strength, but based on the bold and cold calculation of moral strengths. Better and brighter days are ahead. I have never been more optimistic than I am now. Nepe
