Dear Libra, I am not boasting I am the only who got H1B. You took it other way. I am just asking how long before we can apply for SSN before starting October 2006. Its still two month before at this time and my suspicion is if they do not issue SSN so long before. I am just trying to know the timing so that I can prepare. Thats all. Yeah I understand well 65000+20000 gets H1B. Thanks

if you have opt, you should still be able to get SS. go to your ss office..and take all your papers. its takes 15 days for you to get your ss card in mail. mansing..you cant get worried about what other ppl says about do, screw them, if they think you're boasting about getting H1, then well let them think.

Actually I am asking just because I was on F2 status. My H1B was approved just last week. My concern is, since I am already in US, can I apply for SSN at this time though I have work starting date of 1st October, 2006. Thats all.

masingh, you can apply for SSN. all you need is 1. your offer letter. 2. your valid passport and go to Social Security office. they will give you a form. You will have to notarize it and your employer has to fill it out. It will take about 4-6 weeks. Now there is another way around it. You can apply for TIN (tax payer identification number) to IRS and work under that too. It would work. hope this helps

Once you got your H-1 paper you can go any time to get social security card, I think so. Good to know about getting H-1 from F-2. Good luck
