Maoists abduct NA soldier Kantipur Report UDAYAPUR, Oct 26 - A group of the Maoist rebels abducted Nepali Army (NA) soldier Krishnahari Katuwal, a resident of Taraghari in Katani VDC-2, from the district headquarters Gaighat, Thursday afternoon. Katuwal was returning to local Nandabox Battalion of the NA after celebrating the Tihar festival at his home village. According to eyewitnesses, the Maoist group forced him to get down from the bus he was traveling in near the Triyuga River and took him to an undisclosed location before blindfolding him. The NA's Colonel at the Battalion Dr Prem Singh Basnyat said that Katuwal was freed just on Wednesday night by the Maoists shortly after his abduction from his house the same day. Katuwal's family source said that the rebels had been pressurizing him to quit the job and to join their militia. Meanwhile, our Khotang correspondent said that an NA soldier Dinesh Rai, who was abducted by the Maoists from his home at Dumli in Chiuridanda, came into contact of the NA barracks at Mudhe. He was reportedly taken away by a local Maoist brigade commander, Dhiren Budhathoki, as he had gone to his village to celebrate the Tihar festival on Tuesday. Maoist excesses continue; Family members demand release of their dear ones A Dalit youth has accused the Maoists of torturing him for three days on the charge of stealing money from a hotel owner. Kancha Tamang alias Padam Sarki, 27, a native of Ranke Bazaar of Pauwasartap VDC in Panchthar, was charged with stealing Rs 32,000 from the hotel of Kamal Budathoki at Ranke bazaar on October 23. The next day the Maoists caught hold of Sarki and took him away, only to subject him to extreme physical torture for three days. Sarki has sustained severe injuries in his hands, legs, feet and face. Sarki said the Maoists released him Thursday after they found only Rs 7 on his person. They have, however, directed him to pay Rs 40,000 to Budathoki. Sarki said he never stole any money from Budhathoki, reports The Himalayan Times Daily. This is one of the incidents in a series of Maoist excesses after they agreed to join the political mainstream leaving the politics of violence. Meanwhile, the Families and close relatives of those abducted by the Maoists have called for the immediate release of those in Maoist custody. “My husband Sunil Thapa, a restaurateur, was abducted by the Maoists on October 6 from Mahankal,” Roshani Thapa, who is expecting a baby, said at a press meet in the Capital on Friday. Sunil, according to her, is being kept in Maoist captivity in Godavari. Twenty-eight-year old Umesh Shrestha was abducted from his house in Bhaktapur on October 10 and is currently being held in Godavari. “A group of Maoists came to our house and abducted my son Umesh. Likewise, the Maoists came on October 12 and took his motorbike right from our premises,” Ramesh Shrestha said. “I saw the Maoists claim on TV a few days back that they had confiscated the bike, which is completely false,” he added. Nar Bahadur Shrestha said his son Rajesh Shrestha, who was running a hardware shop in Dhumbarahi, was abducted by the Maoists some 10 days ago from Dhumbarahi. Twenty-three-year old Rajesh is also being detained at the brewery. Kisan Lama said her husband Krishna Shrestha, the breadwinner of the family, was abducted by the Maoists on October 14. The Maoists abducted Krishna from a motorcycle workshop in Banasthali, Kathmandu. In yet another incident of Maoist atrocities, the Maoists have threatened and warned Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ), Khotang President Dambar Singh Rai. The Maoists' Khotang district secretary Asmita and district in-charge Pasang threatened and manhandled Rai, who is also a Kantipur correspondent, accusing him of transmitting news about the kidnap by the Maoists of a Nepal Army official. The rebels had not even spared the sports ground and has been occupying the Technical Football Training centre in Dharan, built under the FIFA funded ambitious Goal Project at Bicha Ghopa since October 5. According to The Kathmandu Post daily, three dozen Maoist cadres of the second battalion of Ratna Kumar Sakunta Memorial Brigade of the Mechi-Koshi region have been staying at the centre whose construction is yet to be completed. The Maoists have also stationed a sentry at the flagged entrance. In a report from mid-western town of Nepalgunj, Maoists have forcibly used the residential building of state-run Nepal Television (NTV) at Kohalpur to accommodate their cadres since Thursday. Around two dozen rebels led by Maoist commander Sandesh are staying in the building. nepalnews.com pb Oct 28 06

More tourists robbed in Makalu area BY SURENDRA SUBEDI SANKHUWASABHA, Oct 30 - About a week after 11 Dutch trekkers lost more than Rs 600,000 in the Makalu area, apparently to a thief, eight Frenchmen and a German tourist were robbed of cash and valuables in the same area, Wednesday. The tourists lost Rs 350,000 worth of cash and valuables from a hotel in Tashi village in Makalu VDC-3, according to trekking guide Man Bahadur Gurung, who was with the tourists. Earlier on October 10, Dutch nationals had lost cash and valuables from a hotel in the same VDC. Locals say some foreigners were robbed of Rs 300,000 in the area last year too. They claim involvement of a certain gang behind the string of robberies. "As there is no government presence in the area, no initiative has been taken to find out the lost goods or to check such incidents," a local said. Maoists, meanwhile, say that they are "carrying out investigations" to trace the culprits. Following the incident, the victims have returned to the district headquarters, Khadbari. Also, in the recent times, Maoists here have been collecting Rs 5,000 "donation" from every tourist visiting the area, in the name of "Kirat Autonomous Region". The area is located around 50 kilometers west from Khadbari.

Maoists' atrocities are GOING ON in Nepal. And these Maoists supporters here in Sajha are hiding their tails. ha ha. Maoists' student wing disrupts TU entrance exam Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Oct 31 - The Maoists' student wing-ANNISU (Revolutionary) on Tuesday interrupted the entrance exam of Bachelor level First Year in various campuses of Kathmandu valley demanding to provide opportunity for all the students to study in upper level as per their academic qualification without compelling to sit for entrance exam. The ANNISU-R demanded to abrogate all levels' entrance exams in Tribhuvan University. ANNFIU-R General Secretary, Himal Sharma said those students who have passed-certificates of any lower level should be guaranteed to further study in the upper level in the same subjects they studied in previous level. Sharma made it clear that the provision of entrance exam for the students of Tribhuvan University to further study in the same university has restricted many students to read in higher level. So, the products of Tribhuvan University, unlike the students from abroad, should be provided opportunity to read further without any entrance exam. He further said the university can fix certain percentage and mark obtained in the previous level for the engineering and other technical subjects, but students must not be restricted to study in the upper level citing the reason of failure in the entrance examination, and the university should guarantee on it. Interrupting the entrance exam of Bachelor level First Year today as per its own organization's policy, the union has demanded unconditional admission to all students. I think is this true: Maoist claims on people's support are not factual, says Moriarty The US ambassador James Francis Moriarty has said that the claims made by Maoists regarding the wide public support they enjoy are not factual. Talking to a select group of Indian journalists and intellectuals in New Delhi on Monday, Moriarty said that the Maoists "would get a very few votes if elections are held in the present context

Maoists continue to threaten the press: RSF Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a global rights watchdog has expressed concern over a series of assaults, threats and coercive measures taken by Maoist cadres against the press in various parts of the country even after success of April movement. A press release issued by the RSF said even though Maoist attacks on journalists have considerably decreased compared to previous years, they are nevertheless regular and symptomatic of a failure to tolerate criticism. "On several occasions, and in particular in front of the international mission on press freedom in Nepal, the Maoist party’s most senior leaders have sworn their commitment to the freedom and security of journalists,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said, adding, “These commitments should be urgently respected in practice. We call on the movement’s leaders to bring their militants into line and to show greater transparency,” it added. The international rights watchdog has expressed serious concern over the misbehaviour against journalists in various parts of the country in the charge of writing news that are not in their favour. The RSF also expressed concern that the Maoists have occupied the offices of state-owned Nepal Television (NTV) in Kohalpur, western Nepal. The statement further said, “According to the FNJ, Maoist cadres have detained assaulted, wrongly summoned or censored at least eight journalists since the return to democracy last April.” nepalnews.com pb Nov 01 06

Maoists bar leading companies from dispatching products By NARAYAN SHARMA NAWALPARASI, Nov 2 - Maoists on Thursday barred two big companies from dispatching their products for "refusing to pay tax" to the rebels. The rebels stopped the Chaudhari Group, located at Dumkauli in the district, from dispatching its Wai Wai noodles, to the market since this afternoon. Similarly, the rebels also prohibited the Gorkha Brewery Company, at Mukundapur in the district, from taking its liquor products—Carlsburg and Tuborg-- to the market. According to the local Maoist leaders, the companies were barred from dispatching the products by an order from the Maoists' "People's government." The Maoist "People's militia" surrounded the companies and stopped the officials from taking their products to the markets. The Maoists had been pressuring the companies to pay them "tax" regularly since the past few months. Meanwhile, according to sources, the Ministry of Finance has informed the Home Ministry about the Maoists' forceful "taxation." But, sources said the Home Ministry has not made any attempt to stop the rebels. Posted on: 2006-11-02 09:04:14 (Server Time)

NC cadres protest rebel bullying Kantipur Report KATHMANDU, Nov 2 - About 40 district presidents of the Nepali Congress (NC) party have urged Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to forcefully raise the issue of continuous intimidation, abductions and extortion by Maoists at the district level during the next summit talks. Speaking at a consultation meeting held by the prime minister at his official residence at Baluwatar Wednesday, the heads of the party's district units said the situation has not improved at all at the local level despite agreements one-after-another signed by the Maoists at the center. Most of the district party chiefs suggested that the prime minister ensure the Maoists implement the agreements and pacts immediately. They claimed that the Maoists were still demonstrating arms and keeping their so-called courts active in the districts. They gave the example of Maoist action against party district-level leaders in Kalikot a couple of days ago. In response, Koirala said he would take up the issue with the Maoist leaders immediately, according to Tara Man Gurung, Sankhuwasabha district president of the party. Koirala was quick to ask the district chiefs to return to their districts immediately, Gurung said. Koirala, at the meeting, informed that the ongoing peace process would yield an expected outcome soon and that the much-awaited summit talks would be held within a few days. "At the upcoming talks, the modalities of arms management will be settled, and with that, the peace process will reach a conclusive stage," said Jagadishwor Narsingh KC, NC Nuwakot district president. According to one participant, Koirala hinted that the government and the Maoists have arrived at a conclusion over most of the issues including arms. The district presidents also drew the attention of the prime minister to the ongoing protests by temporary school teachers in most of the districts. They appraised Koirala of the failure of the government to start development projects in the districts, most of it due to Maoist disruptions. 'Make party's stance clear on monarchy first' District heads of the party urged Prime Minister Koirala to make the party's stance on monarchy clear before the party launches its election campaign for the constituent assembly. The district party presidents said the party cannot go to the people with its position on monarchy, the hottest issue in current politics, unclear. They claimed the Nepali Congress may suffer a lot in the election once it is interpreted by the people as a royalist party, said one of the participants in Wednesday's consultation meet held by Koirala. "We urge the party president that we should first be clear about our views on monarchy," said Jagadishwor Narsingh KC, Nuwakot district president of the party. Koirala, however, was against the idea of making the party's position on monarchy clear before polls. "For now, the king's position will be as it is but the people will decide what position they want to give the monarchy, or if they want to abolish it," a participant quoted Koirala as saying. Koirala said he was, however, ready to hold internal party discussions on the monarchy's position. Posted on: 2006-11-01 22:20:21 (Server Time)
