You were a student and will be a student. As long as you have valid I-20, your status will be student (F1) no matter which university you move to within the US. But you will get a new I-20 from each university you go to.

It doesnt matter where ever you transfer. State University, Private College, Community College or even Language Institutes like Kaplan, who provides you with the I-20. You can transfer to any kind of college in any state. Just make sure you have a valid I-20 of the college your attanding. Remember being a foreign student you have to take minimum of 12 credit and maintain the GPA stated by the college to remain in status. Its simple as that.
