noha,

best is contact college and get the info from them...  My experience, in most of online discussion board (specially nepali, no offense ), most people speak even if they dont know the exact answer (solution). So we can not authorize the suggestions made on such sites and can not be considered reliable.

  Thx.

As far as I am concerned about the extension of OPT, you can  apply three months before the expiration of your present OPT with the employment letter and the e-verification number of the company. Since you have the present OPT valid of one year, there won't be any problem working with in that period just for the extension you need to have the employment letter and the e-verification number of the company and you can file for extension with in the nine month from the date of the release of your present OPT.

Hello noha and everybody

The best way to find out information on these OPT question is look at these two links
One that was published on federal registrar regarding opt rule and extension dated April 8 2008

http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/E8-7427.htm

I have pointed this info here

2. Periods of Unemployment During OPT DHS regulations currently define the period of an F-1 student's status as the time the student is pursuing a full course of study at an SEVP-certified school or engaging in authorized post-completion OPT. 8 CFR 214.2(f)(5). They do not specify how much time the student may be unemployed, making it difficult to determine when an unemployed student on post-completion OPT violates the requirements for remaining in F-1 status. As status during OPT is based on the premise that the F-1 student is working, there must be a limit on unemployment, just as the F-1 student's period in school is based on the premise that he is actually pursuing a full-time course of study, and there are limits on how often the student can reduce his course load. An F-1 student who drops out of school or does not pursue a full-time course of study loses status; an F-1 student with OPT who is unemployed for a significant period should similarly put his status in jeopardy. Therefore, this rule specifies an aggregate maximum allowed period of unemployment of 90 days for students on 12-month OPT. This maximum period increases by 30 days for F-1 students who have an approved 17- month OPT period. In addition to clarifying the student's status, this measure allows time for job searches or a break when switching employers.

Another question and answer provied on april and  May 2008 has some additional info

Hello mrhunte

I hope I am getting this right. You are majoring in assosciate degree in science and also you are taking computer classes as elective , since you are planning to work in Java or Unix.  I am afraid, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of the STEM rule . Please see below

( to qualify under STEM you need to have more thane one major one with stem and others with non-stem. having a minor degree or elective wont' qualify under the STEM) . I hope this answers your question.)

Per the information on the followging document http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/supplemental_opt_052308.pdf

Can a student with a dual major qualify for the STEM OPT extension based on one of the degree programs?

  1. If a student has a dual major, and one of the degrees is on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and the job is directly related to the student’s STEM degree, the student would be eligible to apply for the STEM OPT extension.

Can a student qualify for the STEM OPT extension based on the student’s minor?

  1. No.

Hello mrhunter

my previous post was meant to say about the STEM OPT rule extensions and how would it apply. I believe you are correct in assuming that there are no rules saying you can't work in other fields not directly related to your major area of your study.  This is what definition of ( practical training says )
Practical training is defined as full-time, paid employment directly related to the student's major area of study.

if you look at this
http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/E8-7427.htm site
and look under
I. Background and Purpose

it tries to explain what the OPT really means.

Example you major is somthing like nursing and you don't take any elective regarding computer science and you use your OPT to work in computers, that seems like a voilation.

The interpretation (says working in you major area of study is allowed) . But if you mix computer course and other degree course but you are awarded degree in some other field, it shouldn't be a problem.Reason I say this is because , each university or college have a different way of awarding degree , in  your case it says assosciate of degree in science.  what constitutes major area of study in your case  can be interepreted very differently. For example just to get a degree you may have to declare a major, but you may have taken other course works not related to which you were awarded degree for. So most important thing about rules and regulations are interpretation. So in your case you have a degree in science (but you may have takend 2 course in nursing, 2 in computer 2 in biology), just tel me what is your major area of study.

I beleive you shouldn't have any problem , dont' worry about things like this. All uscis wants to know is your are employed or not. And my previous post meant to emphasize on how STEM degree OPT extension would apply or not.
Thanks
