I've received my master's in engineering and worked for three years in software consulting in U.S. Now I'm laid off and thinking of returning to Nepal because I'm unable to find a job (Unemployed for more than 2 months/ staying in a "voluntary vacation" in H1B). I know the things don't look good in Nepal but what are the software career options do I have in Nepal? Thanks.

Hey I know the situation in US arent'  that good but just dont' give up your hope.its always been the quite period of the year..DEC-JAN as its known as unproductive months,Once feb there will be more job coming, probably won't be as glorious as use to be for few years,But keep looking  2 months isn't that long..i've been out of job for 6-7 mths..but indeed i tried..

And about Nepal i went back to Nepal on holiday during 2006 and my friend was working as a manager for the IT company so he asked me to help him out so worked for him for about 3 months. then it was good as good skilled IT professional were leaving the country to fill the demand overseas..there were shortage of people, and IT industry was on rise, as every company felt that they need to spend money on IT..since the trabulent prob from end of 2006 it went down, I think the company are going back to paper age..since there is no electricity they can't run PC's ,there were few small outsourcing companies, due to strike and problems most of them had to close, client pulled out coz they can't deliver in time, other hope was from the IT park in kavre..since maoist blasted it nothin happened ...

But i am sure you will find something there...just to keep u busy, as they lack good IT professional with high standards work,, you possibly take new ideas and start you own IT company..and once things get better start looking for the oppurtunity outside..

all the best with your job hunt n the decision to go back to the country..hope things works out for you ..

cheers !!!

Going back is a big, big , BIG decision. Please be prepared for the unexpected. Remember, you are going back to your country, but you were trained in the US, and you have come to take certain things for granted here. Very few who have gone back have been able to stay there and be succesful. You can still survive here with low paying jobs that do not require high level education or training, and those are still available. This economy will turn and with it the employment situation will improve. The question you have to answer is if you are willing to stick it out until it does?

Of course, if leaving the US and then coming back is not an issue,  then right now is probably the best time to see if you can indeed make it in Nepal. You get to take a year long break to be with family and friends, and at the same time you get to see first hand what it takes to cut it in a country where productivity is confined to 4-6 hours of daily power you get.

Why don't you work in India? Try applying for US companies that have offices in India, i am sure you will get a very good deal, pay in dollars, stay in India, which is near Nepal and you can go home anytime, might be a good alternative. When the situation in US or in Nepal gets better, you can jump to either opportunities.

How good are your relations to folks over here? Do you have enough money to start a company already and start outsourcing? If yes, you can go back to Nepal, start a software company, provide employment to people studying over there and those who graduated  .. at a competitive profit margin , and at the same time, lecture at some colleges, hire folks for internships and squeeze the best potential out of the enthusiastic blood out there. You will earn heaps of money, heaps of respect and satisfaction from your work too. At the same time, you can enjoy the naan-sekuwa at lunch daily. You can enjoy serenity with your family and loved ones around. Oh what a life! Congratulations for your desires and Good Luck brother!

I am also sick and tired of staying here in US. We are
sacrificing so many things by living here in US. Purus, go back to Nepal and enjoy
your life. I think it will be very good decision.
