Brothers and Sisters, I have trying to find some healthy alternatives to our regular daal, bhaat but salad just does not make the cut. Also the American recipes of healthy eating seems and tastes too wierd to me. I know there must be a lot of people eating healthy everyday so wanted to see what other folks are eating out there. It would be great if we could share some Nepalese items which are great to eat and are good for health. For starters, I have been eating wheat tortillas with daal, golbheda ko achar, and dahi tastes great but can't do it twice a day. :-) Thank you everyone.

duracell, Nepali khana is the best man..cant have or create a replacement for it. So dont regret eating Nepali and stop your search for US alternative, you will end up being unhealthy. Just make sure that you have a breakfast(cereals n milk), good lunch(dal bhat tarkari or watever) and a dinner( same again) hehe. And always eat dinner 2 hours before going to bed. Exercise. You will be fine.

you can make nepali khana healthier. Things I would reccomend: 1. If you eat rice for every meal, eat brown rice instead of white. Brown rice has more fiber and contains minerals not present in white. I actually like Brown Basmati, which you can probably find in an Indian grocery. 2. Cook vegetables in less oil and may be use olive oil. Same applies for meat. Avoid red meat and if you eat chicken, cook skinless chicken breasts. 3. The spices itself are not unhealthy so don't think that spicy food is unhealthy. FF

Harikanchha said it best. also replace rice with wheat flour(wheat chakki aata roti) in the evening. alternate meat with fish and try foot long subway once or twice a week(if u r tired of cooking) in a wheat bread with all vegies, and choice of ur meat or tuna. its really affordable. $5 cant beat tht deal. Dont forget the breakfast, the most imp. meal. Start ur morning with 2 slice of wheat bread 1 cup of milk 1 banana or cup of cereal.

The Newar Cuisine is a unique type of cuisine. Mustard oil and a host of spices, such as cumin, sesame seeds, turmeric, garlic, ginger, methi, bayleaves, cloves, cinnamon, pepper, chili, mustard seeds, vinegar, etc. are used in cooking. The cuisine served in the festivals is considered as the best diet cuisine. The grilled meat over the flames of dried wheat plants makes a delicious and spicy typical newari food called choila. In various occasions people from this tribe cook varieties of food depending on the climate and occasions. Newars use baji(beaten rice) in various occasions. A typical Newari serving consists of the beaten rice, choila, different beans, spiced potatoes, kachila (semi-cooked spiced minced meat) spinach, bara, bitter soups and typically two kinds of liquor. Thwon and aila are the common liquors that Newar make at home. Source:WIKIPEDIA but problem with Newa cusine where you can buy THULO KHASIKO MASU in the State?
