My laptop is virus infected. An unwanted software called "personal antivirus" is installed automatically. It then slowed down the speed of the computer. I do not know what other effects it will have. Can you please help me get rid of it. I tried to uninstall it but it does not appear in the add/remove program list. Also I tried to delete its file from program files but was not removed. Your help and suggestion is appreciated. Thanks

By what you have mentioned, it sounds like its a malware/spyware. The very best thing to do in format and install the whole new OS from or change it back to factory settings. Another way maybe - downloading a program named "spybot" - it is free and very effective against malware and spywar - BUT everybody knows you never can get rid of malware/spyware completely until you format and reinstall.
Hope this helps

Try "Spybot Search and Destroy". It will most likely to remove the malware. I am sure, you dont need to format the system. If Spybot S & D, did not remove the malware then best option is to post the "hijack log" on a website www.techsupportforum.com . They might take a couple of days but definitely go through your log and instruct you to how to remove that particular malware. They are so good on that they will leave only after making sure that your computer is totally free of malware. Just follow their instruction thorougly step by step until they say its totally clean. Source: My own experience with www.techsupportforum.com twice for similar problem.

I am not a computer junkie but would run my Antivirus scan (Norton, Mcafee etc.) first. If it didn't solve the problem, I would restore the operating system to an earlier time when I didn't have the virus.

Download and Install Malware Byte's Anti Malware. This should clean the virus or other malwares on your computer.
