When Flying Ethiad from JFK to KTM, there is a transit at Abu Dhabi of apporximately 12 hours... is a hotel room provided by that airlines for this period or do people generally "hang out" at the airport?

Any Input from people who have flown Ethiad before is much appreciated.

I think you have to ask them. When I flew Qatar airlines, there was a 10 hour transit. Once, I did not ask them anything and so stayed at the airport. But next time, I went to their stands and asked them for the hotel and they managed it right away. So, I think you have to be proactive about it and ask the airlines. It doesn't hurt to call the Ethiad airlines and ask them.

Oh and BTW how far was the hotel from the airport and do we have to worry about a transit visa?

I did not fly in Etihad Airways but my roommate did...Yes Etihad Provides hotel accomodation @ Abu Dabhi International Airport if there is a long layover (>~12 hours) but its based on the availability..The best thing to do is contact the airlines as soon as you purchase the ticket so that they can book a room for you. The hotel is inside the Airport and you don't have to worry about Transit Visa.
BTW when are you flying ?
Good Luck.

Do not expect high about hotel, it would not be a star hotel. It happen in Bahrain, they will collect you from the airport to a lodge. I had to await mid night for dinner. They served breakfast in the morning. There will be no single room, most rooms are planned for family. You will be lucky to find the master bedroom for privet bathroom other wise you have to use next to kitchen.
So, it may not be a hotel hotel but a motel kind.

The hotel @ abu dhabi airport has only has 40 rooms so you should ask your travel agent to book asap.  It is a nice hotel within the terminal so you don't have to worry about visa.  Check the tripadvisor link below to see some pictures.

Etihad will provide hotel  but you need to make sure that the room is booked for you.at Abu Dhabi, you just need to show your passport on transfer desk. The hotel is inside the airport and it's not bad. They will also provide lunch or dinner if you have long layover . I flew in etihad about a month ago and i liked it.

Summer is not good month to travel so avoid any summer travel. Check travel agency as many as you can, their price difference has a range of $50-200.

Agreed to SyangJali, I have found that direct booking from the airline could sometimes be chaeper than travel agetns, especially Zen travels, not deriding them unnecessarily but they only seem to have good deals on flights through India.

Check everything. I would love to know specifics on flights through Delhi airport, is it as bad as they say it is?

It is not bad as many people as commented but those who had not traveled via India are always scared. There are certain thing you should do, Do not scare to be adventitious .
Go via India, you are  going to love the travel and fare. You will thank me again.
