Now this thing called IP is boggling my mind.
I have seen some friends note down the IP address of another user in sajha.
http://ww.sajha.com/sajha/html/openThread.cfm?threadid=38012
For example, in the above thread, bhunte had noted down the ip address of the computer that nas was using. How did he do that?

I had also read about static ip address and dynamic ip address; let's not talk about proxy addressses. Webservers have satic ip address but our laptop or pcs have dynamic ip address which changes each time we restart the machine.
So, how can anyone talk about ip addresse for a laptop like bhunte pointed out that nas was logged in from a particular ip address. That ip address might be assigned to another computer at another time.

oh my god, i am just so confused!! Can anyone explain these things please.

Bhunte i think you have a better idea as you were the person to point the ip address, so explain it please.

Guys,
It is illegal to get into another persons computer remotely. In windows, when you go to start, type log and press enter. If sb has been into your computer, there is the ip address of that person's computer and the activity and you can file charges based on that. So it is not safe to do so.

With a little research i found out that every big email provider has an option to see from which ip address the message came from. I think it is the right of the receiver to know who sent the message as usernames can be anything and username is not a good idea to know the sender.

When i emailed to myself on sajha.com, then in my yahoo inbox which is my contact mail, i received a mail saying that i got a mail. There i found that the sender ip address was that of sajha.com as the one who emailed me on yahoo was sajha not myself (i emailed myself on sajha inbox).

So, SAN(i think he is the administrator) i think you should also provide the facility to see the ip address of the sender in sajha inbox.

Hi,

If you are using Outlook, there is an easy way to lookup the email header information:

Right Click mail --- Click Message Options --- Read the "Internet Headers"

Check on IP corresponding to  "Received: from":

:))

As mentioned above, the only way to find the IP address of a user that originated an email is by checking the email headers. Depending on your email client, there are various ways to look at the header as mentioned in the following article.

http://aruljohn.com/info/howtofindipaddress/

Once you figure out the IP address, you can use a service such as

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

to figure out the vicinity of the IP address. There isn't an easy way to figure out the exact location of an IP address with freely available or even most commercial Geo location tools.

Just to give you a little background on IP addresses, for IPv4, there are certain addresses that are allocated to private networks.
                                                                                 Start                       End                         No. of addresses
24-bit Block (/8 prefix, 1 × A)                              10.0.0.0                 10.255.255.255     16777216
20-bit Block (/12 prefix, 16 × B)                         172.16.0.0             172.31.255.255     1048576
16-bit Block (/16 prefix, 256 × C)                      192.168.0.0           192.168.255.255     65536

Any IP address in these ranges, belong to a private network. Any public IP address originating from a private network, can only be traced to a range of public ip addresses in that network. For instance, 2 different users sitting in a library in a university could potentially have the same public address at various times -- the reason being that a private network dynamically allocates an IP address to a computer.

A router in your home could dynamically assign IP addresses although these are usually in small ranges. You can also change your network settings to a static IP address. For instance, if you want to run a website from your computer, you need to set your IP address to a specific address and then point any DNS authority to your IP address.
