I worked in 2 different compay last year--Company A(Desi consultancy) and Company B(Full Time).
Company A- 3 months(JAN,FEB,March)- Wages-- $10,000
Company B- 7 months (June to DEC) - Wages-- $45,000
I was OPT but converted to my H1B on last Oct 2010(so just 3 months in H1B).
so now i got 2 W-2 from my two different company. I tried to file my tax from Turbo-Tax and when I put both company together, i have to pay $200 to the fedral but when I just put only one company in the Turbo tax (either of company)and check the tax return- i will get reasonal amount return.
Now anyone have experience this situation with opt and H1B with two company?
Please suggest me to get good fedral return( No-worries about state tax return)

i went to HR block to file my taxes for 2010, as i had never done it before, i thought they would be the best person to contact. and  it seems like I owe money to IRS :( and also my employer they were charging me taxes for two different states for initial two months...until I realized and asked them why was i being charged for two states and they said "it was their mistake I can always claim it back when I file for tax return "
but now since I owe money to IRS can I claim for the refund of taxes that my employer charged by mistake ?

help appreciated .

If you're illegible for 1040 (not NR) then most software will take you to 1040EZ if you are single and you do not have mortgage interest to pay and no tuition interest to deduct ( for tuition  1040 or 1040 A )

To enjoy itemized deduction must have mortgage interest , real estate tax and state tax , health expense over 7.5 percent of your AGI and job seeking deduction will be any thing over 2% of your AGI , excise tax , donations ( some more) all total vs your standard deduction which ever is higher , you will chose to deducted. Now you figure out if you are illegible for Itemized deduction or not.

Software use is easier to file tax but if you want to know about tax suggested to get the 1040 instruction book that will be available in post office and library. May take couple hours but will prepare you for paper filing and make you understand what you can deduct and what not.

Now many tax preparation software are advertising for free e-filing, but I have been using Tax Act for couple years and easy to use as TurboTax but cheaper. Thank you.

Sorry to divert the post but here's another scenario that I have. If anyone could help me.

I graduated in Spring 2009 but finally paid my total tuition fee last year which is 2010. I've received the letter from my college for the tuition fee that i paid last year. So my question is, how can i include that in 2010 when i haven't gone to college? If i include that, i might have to also include that i went to school for that year, don't I?  If i can include that, will i get any refund at all?

Any tax expert help is appreciated.

While doing tax online, prefer to do step by step so you would not miss any.  Any topic does not apply to you, just click no or go to next topic. Most college and university will send 1098 T for the tuition and scholarship paid and received. If you have any other expenses like books, material, even computer for computer science major student (mostly buy from univeristy/college store) will be allowed for educational expenses including some mandatory fees (but not health insurance) can be added. If you go online and browse educational expenses, give you more info than we could give.

Can't escape taxes.  FYI, there is a "Make Work Pay" credit for $400 for year 2010. Did u include that? For next year, you might want to update your w4 so that IRS withholds more money upfront and you pay very minimal or no tax come tax time.

Taxation rate is different for different amount of money you make throughout the year. If you make 55000 P.A that means you are in the tax bracket of 25%. And (25% of 55000)=13750 is already paid by you to the government.
Calculation goes like this

First $8,025 dollars you made is taxed with 10% rate = $ 802.5(a)

Then $32550 of the money $32550-$8025 with 15% rate=$3678.75(b)

Again $55000 of the money $ 55000-$32550=22450 with 25% rate=$5612.5(c)

sum(a)+(b)+(c)=10093.75 is the actual amount you need to pay but you already paid 13750.So you will get the difference amount as your tax return.

It looks like one of those company might have kept you in different rate than 25% if that rate is less than 25% then the Tax amount you already paid to the government will be less and if its less than 10093.75 then you need to pay government back the money.
I am not into accounting I might be wrong  refer to this website

Mr.Everest, you are right on rate , and payroll department or companies are responsible for appropriate withheld from employees too. . They have to withheld the federal , social security and medicare according to the employee income level and most of the case it will closer to their tax liability and depending on the w-2 form fillled by empoyee but if the tax payer works two different places and still holding @15 % tax bracket  but the income are different tax bracket  than withhled will end up more income but less withheld. Result you will owe to government.
If emplyer had witheld two state , to get the money back from the state you are not residing , you must file tax for refund, That will be the easiest way.

Total tax I have paid is $6500 and turbo tax shows me, I owe $200 to them. Again my question is if I put only one company(either company), Turbo-Tax shows around $1200 refund,  but if I add another more company-A, I owe them $200. $45000 and $55000 are on same tax bracket. I know somethings is wrong, but don't know what?
Appreciated all your suggestions!

Zaren: How long you have been to USA and what is your future plan? If planing for GC you need to do your own homework first. I mean as that dude suggested , get a 1040 form and instruction , spend your weekend on it. Do not rely on us  specially on Tax  matter and most tax specialist will not spend their time suggesting on sajha blog.
Nothing is wrong on most tax software but something on your head. If you have not  complicated tax filing , the results from most online tax software will give you the almost the same result. In your case , you worked two place that is all, If you see wrong , the instruction book will show you how to calculate tax libility. Get the answer by yourself and still not satisfied, give us figure we will show you step by step , why you are paying that much.

Now you are asking for nothing because you have  not done  your own home work and we can not make you literate  on tax matter overnight and  that is via sajha Kurakani.

Sorry bro; Sarcasm is one of the sevices we provide free here in Sajha.
ज्यास्ती कमाओगे तो ज्यास्ती हि तिरोगे ना भैये. Even a 12 dollar interest may give you different tax liability.

Did anybody suggested to exclude it or you trying to be an wise ass?

Certain Expenses can be deducted in the year it is paid best example is medical expenses, some deductible  dues. I am not quiet sure on Educational deduction, extra  reserach as well some visit to Tax Preperation offfice needed.
For sure you can not claim the same deductible expense twice, if you have claimed the education deduction on 2009 based on your 1098T form , then you are done.
If you have used 1040 last year then you can amend your 2009 tax  based on your 1098 T ( even not paid ) and you will be getting the differences and I am sure for this.

Thanks again!!

Quick question: How you are illgible for " Head of Houshold" not  "married filing jointly"?
Do you know the difference between these two terms in Taxation?

Here is the defination of HOH:

You can claim the Head of Household (HOH) filing status on your tax return if you are unmarried, have cared for a dependent for over half the year, and paid more than half the cost of maintaining a home.Taxpayers claiming the Head of Household filing status benefit from a higher standard deduction and lower tax rates compared to the single filing status. The definition of HOH filing status is quite specific, so read over the criteria carefully.
  • You are unmarried or "considered unmarried" on the last day of the year.
  • You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.
  • A "qualifying person" lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the "qualifying person" is your dependent parent, he or she does not have to live with you.

@SYANJALI
--You are unmarried or "considered unmarried" on the last day of the year.

I am unmarried.

--You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year

I spent more than half in my home

--A "qualifying person" lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the "qualifying person" is your dependent parent, he or she does not have to live with you.

My GF live with me when skool is off.

Appreciated your concern.

You can use GF to qualify for HOH, make sure she was with you as allocated time . She does not qualify for temporary absence because she is going to school.
Seems you have done more research than we did, thats the way it should be , i like it , aha aha ..............
